How to renew your SSM business licence online (2026)
If you run a sole proprietorship or partnership in Malaysia, your SSM business registration must be renewed before it expires — or you risk a fine, a lapsed certificate, and problems opening bank accounts, signing contracts, or applying for grants. Here's the calm version of how to do it in under 10 minutes.
What is SSM renewal?
SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia / Companies Commission of Malaysia) registers every business in the country. Sole proprietorships and partnerships registered under the Registration of Businesses Act 1956 must renew their registration every 1–5 years. Sdn Bhd companies file annual returns instead — this guide is for businesses with a Sijil Pendaftaran Perniagaan (Business Registration Certificate).
When to renew
- Renew on or before the expiry date printed on your certificate.
- You can renew up to 30 days before expiry.
- If you renew late, SSM may charge a compound (commonly RM50/month, capped) and your registration is technically lapsed in the interim.
- If you let it lapse for more than 12 months, the registration is terminated and you'd need to re-register from scratch.
SSM renewal fees
- RM30/year — trade name (e.g. "Aiman Trading")
- RM60/year — personal name (e.g. "Aiman bin Ali")
- + RM5/year per branch
You can renew for 1 to 5 years in a single payment. Most owners pick 3–5 years to reduce the chance of missing a future deadline.
How to renew online via Ezbiz (step by step)
- Create or log in to your Ezbiz account at ezbiz.ssm.com.my. First-time users need to verify their account at an SSM counter once.
- Go to Perniagaan → Pembaharuan Perniagaan from the dashboard.
- Select your business from the list and pick the renewal duration (1–5 years).
- Confirm your details — owner address, business address, and nature of business. Update anything outdated before paying.
- Pay online via FPX or credit/debit card.
- Download the new Business Registration Certificate immediately after payment and save it where you can find it (not just your downloads folder).
Documents you might need
- MyKad number of the owner / all partners
- Current business address and branch addresses
- Existing business registration number
- Email and phone number on the Ezbiz account
What happens if you miss the deadline
A lapsed SSM certificate isn't just paperwork. Banks can freeze account openings, landlords and suppliers can refuse to sign new contracts, and you become ineligible for most government grants and tenders until renewal is settled. After 12 months lapsed, your business name is up for grabs by anyone else.
Never miss another renewal
SSM is one of around a dozen recurring deadlines a typical Malaysian SME juggles — alongside local council licences, MOF, CIDB, halal, and sector-specific permits. RenewDesk gives you a single Compliance Health Score, a secure vault for every certificate, and multilingual (EN/BM/中文) reminders before each deadline so nothing slips.
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew my SSM at the counter instead?
Yes — any SSM branch accepts walk-in renewal, but online via Ezbiz is faster and the fee is the same.
How long does the renewed certificate take?
It's issued instantly once payment clears on Ezbiz. Download it the same session.
Can someone else renew it for me?
Yes — a licensed company secretary or an authorised representative (with a letter of authorisation) can renew on your behalf.
